NEXT COURSE 15th March 2025
A course and exam for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.
The course lasts for a total of 10 hours, this compromises 3 hours of pre course work. We will send the course materials and guidance at least a week before the course.
On the day, which starts from 09.00, there is a full 7 hours of training, with an hour for lunch.
For those who wish to do the exam, there will be a further few hours at the end of the day.
No Previous experience is required
we do need a minimum of 4 students to go ahead with the course. If we don’t reach 4 then an alternative date or full refund will be offered
The course is able to cater for a maximum of 12 students however we typically run with 6-8 students on any course. This gives all students the maximum amount of time using their own set and practical experience using the equipment
Anyone over the age of 12 can attend the course however only those over the age of 16 can attend the exam. Anyone under the age of 16 would need to attend with an adult.
For those wishing to attend the assessment and gain the SRC qualification, there is an additional section at the end of the course. This is run by an external RYA assessor but will be arranged by us.
This takes the form of a short written paper followed by a practical assessment, this will simply ask you to repeat the steps you have been taught during the day.
The cost of this assessment is £70 payable to the RYA and is separate to the course cost.
If anyone has an issue with a written paper, please let us know in advance and we can arrange for this to be taken verbally.
£125 per person,
5% off if you book 3 people
